The Decision That Changed My Life Essay Example For Students
The Decision That Changed My Life Essay As children, adults always ask the same question ââ¬Å"What do you want to be when you grow up? â⬠When we were five, they asked and our answers would be astronaut, president, firefighter, princess or in my case a doctor. When we were ten, they would ask again and we answered with cowboy, singer, or in my case Command Officer. But know that weââ¬â¢ve grown up, they asked again and they wanted a serious answer. Well I answered RN. They were quite intrigued with that answer and hoped that my ââ¬Å"dreamsâ⬠will come true. To be honest, Science is such a big deal in my family. We will write a custom essay on The Decision That Changed My Life specifically for you for only $16.38 $13.9/page Order now Everyone had some type of a degree in Science the expectations were high for me. I would get lectured what I should do in order to succeed my ââ¬Å"goalâ⬠. So I made a plan for high school to take all the courses that were required to get into University and see what will go from there. Despite all the Science courses, I took a Communications Technology courses thinking ââ¬Å"it will be that one easy course that will bring up my averageâ⬠. Taking that course was the most eye and mind opening decision that I have ever made, and it changed my life forever. I took that Communications Technology course thinking that it will help bring up my average, which it did incredibly, but it also helped open my eyes on what I am truly passionate about which is design. In that course, I learned how to use Photoshop, Flash and Illustrator as well as Photography skills. It helped me think of ideas that were out of the box. It helped challenge me to my fullest and to the extreme. Because of this course, I gave up on my ââ¬Å"dreamâ⬠of becoming an RN and decided to fulfill my dream of becoming a Graphic Designer in Advertisement. Becoming a Graphic Designer is no easy job; it consists of leadership, teamwork, time management, creativity and lots of focus and organization. The strengths that I can bring to this career in this field are multiple skills. For one, I am a great leader as I am able to instruct what others should do in order to get the job done. As well as, I have such a creative mind when it comes to thinking out of the box. Another skill that I have is that I am great with time management, as I am able to stay organized about what should be done at what time or date. Using these skills help me think about how the workplace will be like as a Graphic Designer. I imagine it being filled with all these artistic and inspiring people who have been in this profession for years. As wanting to achieve my goal as a Graphic Design, I believe Communication also plays a big part in success. Communication helps Designers to explain their artwork when promoting it to a client. Also it helps with professional meetings when describing and inspiring others on their ââ¬Å"masterpieceâ⬠. I believe Communications helps sell and encourage others when it comes to Graphic Design. If I could go back in time and were asked the same question again ââ¬Å"What do you want to be when you grow upâ⬠I would have said Graphic Designer. I would have saved so much more time with my life if I had known what I am truly passionate about in life. Realizing that becoming an RN was not a good decision and Sciences was not my desire in life. In Conclusion, by taking Communications Technology it has changed my life for the better rather for the ââ¬Å"stereotypical worseâ⬠.

Handmaids Tale Essay Essay Example
Handmaids Tale Essay Essay Example Handmaids Tale Essay Paper Handmaids Tale Essay Paper One of the main ideas in the novel The Handmaidââ¬â¢s Tale written by Margaret Atwood, is relationships and their importance as there is lack of intimacy and human contact which are both controlled and prohibited in Gilead. We can see that in this totalitarian society, all relationships are controlled strictly and monitored and there are boundaries which you must not cross. In this society, even sex is controlled. As a handmaid, you are obliged to have sex with your Commander at fixed times and this sexual event is named ââ¬Ëthe Ceremonyââ¬â¢. The relationship between Offred and the three men in her life: the Commander, his chauffeur Nick and her husband Luke, are important to this theme of importance of relationships as these relationships are all very different from one another and we see the different ways in which they are important to Offred and what role they play in Offredââ¬â¢s life. Offred is the protagonist in this novel and she is present in a society in which all relationships are strictly controlled and monitored, and where all human contact beyond that within a marriage, is forbidden. The society acts upon a fundamentalist view and has a distorted view of Christianity. : Offred demonstrates just how basic and important a human need such as being touched, is. ââ¬Å"I hunger to commit the act of touch,â⬠says Offred. In this society, simple things such as the act of touch and love within a relationship have been banned. These are small things that Offred regrets not taking for granted in the past. ââ¬Å"How much we took things for grantedâ⬠says Offred. Offred is a handmaid and their role in Gilead is simply just to procreate for their hosts who are powerful but childless couples. ââ¬Å"We are two-legged wombsâ⬠says Offred. Even sex is regulated in this society, it isnââ¬â¢t a matter of choice or recreation. Offred as a handmaid, is made to have sex during certain times and the sexual act is called ââ¬Ëthe Ceremonyââ¬â¢. In Gilead, pleasure is frivolous and unnecessary. You simply procreate to make babies. Kissing is forbidden as it is too much of an emotional attachment. Sex for Offred is something disgusting which she is forced to do in order to not be sent to the colonies. Sex in this society is simply for procreation and has no other purpose. All of the relationships Offred has/had are significant but especially those with the three men in her life, the Commander, his chauffeur Nick and her former husband Luke. Offredââ¬â¢s relationship with the Commander is both complicated and causes alot of problems. Offred is a Handmaid to him and his wife Serena Joy and they basically own her, hence her name shows this; it is a patronymic that clearly establishes ownership. The relationship between Offred and the Commander is a strictly regulated one where Offred is supposed to have contact with him only during ââ¬Ëthe Ceremonyâ⬠, which is a grotesque threesome in which the Commander keeps trying to impregnate Offred who lies between Serena Joyââ¬â¢s thighs. Which of us is it worst for? Her or Meâ⬠says Offred. In one way, the Commander is Offredââ¬â¢s ââ¬Å"husbandâ⬠, since in Gilead this is a legally approved/forced relationship, but in another sense she is also the third person in the triangle of the Commander, his wife and herself who is like a mistress which is ironic. But the Commander is not satisfied with the official arrangement. Even though he follows the regime th at introduced this system, he breaks the rules and summons Offred to his study in the evenings. The Commander is a fatherly figure for Offred. I feel like a child summoned to the principalââ¬â¢s officeâ⬠says Offred which shows paternalism symbolism. The Commander forms a special relationship with Offred as they share a love of words so when he summons her, Offred unreluctantly plays scrabble with him. In return for her company, the Commander gives Offred things that arenââ¬â¢t available to her such as hand lotion, magazines, human contact and knowledge. Because words have been banned from this society, scrabble has become something erotic for Offred, like sex was in the past. ââ¬Å"Now of course itââ¬â¢s something different. Now itââ¬â¢s forbidden, for us. Now itââ¬â¢s indecentâ⬠¦Now itââ¬â¢s desirableâ⬠¦Itââ¬â¢s as if heââ¬â¢s offered me drugsâ⬠says Offred. Emotions and everything that went with the normal life of the past have become eroticized because now theyââ¬â¢re forbidden. Sex and actions of intimacy have become mechanical acts. In this society, what used to be nothing has become indecent, erotic and secret. And what used to be erotic has been deduced to nothing. Offred uses the words ââ¬Å"voluptuous, glossy, luxury, candies and peppermintâ⬠to describe the scrabble counters. She involves all her senses to describe them as she is mesmerised by them. She is able to create words with them, which she craves. The Commanderââ¬â¢s behaviour illustrates two significant ideas explored in the novel. The first is by considering himself before his own laws that he should be following, he demonstrates the corruption that is so often a part of totalitarian regimes. He also emphasises that all people, even the powerful, need human contact and interaction. They miss simple things like scrabble and having real relationships as well. They are human and crave affection too. I want you to kiss meâ⬠¦As you meant itâ⬠says the Commander. Offred likes the special relationship she has with the Commander as it gives her something to do and occupies space in her life. She is fooling herself but it makes her feel like more than just a womb. ââ¬Å"To him Iââ¬â¢m not longer merely a usable body. To him I am not merely empty. â⬠says Offred. However sheââ¬â¢s also two-minded towards the relationship. She is a survivor, reluctant to do anything that might risk her life or break the law but she also feels she has no choice but to obey his orders, ââ¬Å"like an attentive petâ⬠. She is conscious of the risk: ââ¬Å"For him, I must remember I am only a whimâ⬠says Offred. The Commander makes her dress in a costume to go with him to Jezebelââ¬â¢s, a brothel, where she is shown as his possession, and expected to show ââ¬Å"realâ⬠affection. Offred is aware of the complexity of the situation, ââ¬Å"Maybe none of this is about control. Maybe it isnt really about who can own whom, who can do what to whom and get away with it. Maybe its about who can do what to whom and be forgiven for it. Never tell me it amounts to the same thingâ⬠says Offred. Offredââ¬â¢s relationship with Nick is more of a fantasy romance. They have chemistry between them from the first time she sees him polishing the car and notices him. Then Nick makes his presence felt literally. ââ¬Å"Hes so close that the tip of his boot is touching my foot I feel my shoe soften, blood flows into it, it grows warm, it becomes a skin â⬠says Offred. Their first meeting was arranged by Serena Joy, who hoped that Nick would succeed where the Commander had failed in getting Offred pregnant. Serena Joy treats Offred as a child, saying that if Offred sleeps with Nick and gets pregnant, she will treat her and give her a picture of her daughter. But then the relationship continues, as Offred risks her life to meet Nick for sex. Her craving for human contact overcomes her need to survive. ââ¬Å"I did not do it for him, but for myself entirelyâ⬠¦I did not feel munificent, but thankful, each time he would let me inâ⬠and ââ¬Å"In order to do this I became reckless, I took stupid chances. After being with the commander I would go upstairs in the usual way, but then I would go along the hallâ⬠¦Then I would knock softly, a beggarââ¬â¢s knockâ⬠says Offred. Nick and Offred have a real relationship, with real feelings involved. Trust meâ⬠says Nick. Nick does kiss Offred. ââ¬Å"He puts his hand on my arm, pulls me against him, his mouth on mine, what else comes from such denial? â⬠says Offred. Offred feels she is doing something wrong and feels guilt every time. Offred remembers the two-year affair she and Luke had before he divorced his wife. An affair that her best friend Moira has disapproved of . She and Luke were married and happy but after the revolution, when all women were fired and had their bank balances transferred to their husbands, she became aware of a change in their relationship. Heââ¬â¢s enjoying this,â⬠she thinks, of Lukeââ¬â¢s feeling towards the economic power he had been given over her by the Government. ââ¬Å"Maybe he even likes it. We are not each otherââ¬â¢s any more. Instead, I am hisâ⬠says Offred. She is too afraid to speak up about her financial dependence and then it becomes too late. We see the interaction between the sexes and how men and women are treated in this society through these three relationships Offred has with men. Although neither the Commander nor Luke seem to do much, Nick is different through his selfless action of rescuing Offred from arrest at the end, possibly at the cost of his own life. Although the novel shows us a feminist nightmare, a society where women have no identity and are defined and controlled by their fertility, Nickââ¬â¢s relationship with Offred also shows us that men too are repressed and controlled in this society. Itââ¬â¢s said that Nick ââ¬Å"hasnt been issued a woman He doesnt rateâ⬠. Nick is a hero for helping Offred. Offred needs him to be there for her when she is lonely and craves human contact, living in this society where it is repressed. She needs the Commander to give her something to do, occupy space in her life nd to play scrabble with, which is erotic and forbidden. If the Commander is her ââ¬Å"husbandâ⬠and Nick her ââ¬Å"loverâ⬠, Luke, her husband in ââ¬Å"the time beforeâ⬠, filled both roles. He was there for her in the past but is also a parallel with the Commander in that they are both in positions of power over Offred. We see the importance of these relationships to the theme of importance of relatio nships as they show that lack of intimacy and human contact in Gilead is causing people to crave affection and need someone to be there for them in order for them to carry on living.

Feminists Turn Miss America 1968 Into a Protest
Feminists Turn Miss America 1968 Into a Protest The Miss America Pageant that took place on September 7, 1968, was no ordinary pageant. Hundreds of feminist activists showed up on the Atlantic City Boardwalk to enact their ââ¬Å"Miss America Protest.â⬠They distributed publicity materials titled ââ¬Å"No More Miss America!â⬠Organizers The group behind the Miss America Protest was New York Radical Women. Prominent feminists who participated included Carol Hanisch, who originally had the idea to protest the pageant, as well as Robin Morgan, and Kathie Sarachild. What Was Wrong With Miss America? The women who came to the Miss America Protest had several complaints about the pageant: It judges women on impossible standards of beauty. The protesters called the standards ââ¬Å"ludicrous.â⬠The pageant objectifies women and thereby harms all women. The protesters disliked the hypocrisy of the pageant, specifically the double standard of the Madonna/whore fantasy, in which men irrationally demand that women be innocent and beautiful, while also satisfying the mens lust. The feminists had other political disagreements with the pageant as well: They considered the pageant racist, for never having had a black Miss America. The activists opposed the Vietnam War and felt the pageant supported it by sending the Miss America winner to Vietnam to entertain the troops. There was a blatant inequality in encouraging girls to grow up to become Miss America. The standard line in the United States to any boy was that he could grow up to be president. Why not women? Why was Miss America supposed to be their equivalent dream? Rampant Consumerism The women at the Miss America Protest also criticized the consumer aspect of the pageant and the sponsors who used the contestants to promote their products. At the protest, the feminists of New York Radical Women announced a boycott of the companies that sponsored the pageant. à ââ¬Å"Cattle Auctionâ⬠The Miss America Protest began in the afternoon on the boardwalk. There at least 150 women marched with signs of protest. Some of their slogans called the pageant a cattle auction, for parading women around to judge them on their looks, the way men would judge cattle to decide the animalsââ¬â¢ worth. The protesters nominated a sheep for Miss America and even crowned a live sheep on the boardwalk. Paying Attention to Liberation At the end of the evening, when the winner was crowned, several of the protesters who had sneaked inside unfurled a banner from the balcony that read ââ¬Å"Womenââ¬â¢s Liberation.â⬠Miss America was a highly anticipated and widely watched event in 1968, so much of the nation tuned in to the live broadcast. The protest received media attention, which in turn attracted more women to the Womenââ¬â¢s Liberation movement. The protesters asked the media to send female reporters to cover their demonstration and demanded that if there were any arrests that they only be made by women police officers.à Bras on Fire? The Miss America Protest apparently gave birth to one of the greatest myths of the womenââ¬â¢s rights movement: the myth of bra burning.à The protesters at the Miss America Pageant threw items of their oppression into a ââ¬Å"freedom trash can.â⬠Among these items of oppression were girdles, high-heeled shoes, some bras, copies of Playboy magazine, and hair curlers. The women never lit these items on fire; throwing them out was the symbolism of the day. It has been reported that the women attempted to get a permit to burn the items but were denied because of the danger fire would pose to the wooden Atlantic City Boardwalk. The intent to set them on fire may have been what sparked the rumor that bras actually were burned. There is no documented instance where 1960s feminists burned their bras, although the legend persists. No More Miss America? Feminists protested Miss America again in 1969, although the second protest was smaller and did not receive much attention. The Womens Liberation Movement continued to grow and develop, with more protests occurring and more feminist groups being formed over the next few years. The Miss America Pageant still exists; the pageant moved from Atlantic City to Las Vegas in 2006.

Analysis of story Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 500 words
Analysis of story - Essay Example Thomas is strangely aware that Victorââ¬â¢s friendship would last only until the ashes of his father are brought back but he had made a promise to Victorââ¬â¢s father and intended to keep it. Thomas had been a dreamer always and recalls an incident, where he was awaiting a vision near a desolate waterfall, and Victorââ¬â¢s father had dutifully advised him, brought him back and also bought him dinner. Considering that Thomas was an orphan, this gesture was a highlight in his loveless life. Thus, the promise made to Victorââ¬â¢s father was far more important than his ego. The trip brings up the past with colorful imagery of two young boys who had experienced life and grew up together but also grew apart due to peer pressure and a society that shunned souls such as Thomas. The tone of the story is extremely melancholic in nature. On one hand you have the death of a man and the sadness that comes with it, while on the other hand we have a character that is always lost in his dreams, narrating stories, feeling the breeze on his face and then also trying to fly, adding a touch of comic drama to the story. Even the name of this character ââ¬ËThomas Builds-the Fireââ¬â¢ is comic in nature showing the subtle humor that the author so craftily manages to weave into the narrative. The story is interrupted at one point during the firework celebration stating that ââ¬Å"Years later, they would need much more.â⬠(Alexie)This shows the underlying satirical humor and comic relief in sudden spurts, almost sarcastically threaded into the story. Therefore according to Freytagââ¬â¢s pyramid, we have the Exposition, which is the loss of his job and the death of Victorââ¬â¢s father, the Rising Action wherein Victor plans to make the trip, leading to him befriending his childhood friend Thomas once again but only for a selfish motive. This leads to the climax,

After the Census of 2000, how have reapportionment affected the State Research Paper
After the Census of 2000, how have reapportionment affected the State of Nevada - Research Paper Example Nevada is one of the fifty states of the United States, situated in the west part of the United States Being one of the US states, Nevada participates in the apportionment in the United States, which involves a process of dividing 435 seats in the House of Representatives among the fifty states in the United States. According to the 2000 census report, the Nevada state had a total population of 2,002,032 0f which 1,998,267 was resident population and 3,775 included the united states population overseas for those whose hometown was Nevada. The article further states that the main aim of apportionment is to evenly distribute the congress seats among the fifty states. According to census determines the number of representatives that a state has in the United States House of Representatives. Those states with large populations are allocated more representatives compared to the low populated states. How reapportionment has affected the State of Nevada after the 2000 census Reapportionment is the process of allocation of seats among the fifty states in the United States based on the previous census. This allocation of the seats is determined by a stateââ¬â¢s population. Reapportionment takes place after two years since the last census; hence, after the 2000 census, reapportionment was done in 2003. . this apportionment population includes the adults, children, United States citizens, and immigrants. Importantly, Nevada received additional one representative for its state; however, each of the fifty states is usually entitled to one representative depending on the population of a state. A census in the United States is conducted after every ten years. ... When the census is done, the results are reported to the president by the end of that year, thus the results of the census are used to allocate the congress seats to all the states. There are four different types of formulas that are used when apportioning seats to the states. One of the formulas is the method of greatest divisors; this method divides the total population by the number of seats assigned to each state, such that every state is given the exact number of seats that it deserves. The second formula is the method of major fractions that was invented by Daniel Webster. It was used in the 1840ââ¬â¢s, in which it considered adding a seat to a state that had a fraction of a half and above. Alexander proposed a third formula in the 1850ââ¬â¢s that ensured that members were allocated to each state depending on the stateââ¬â¢s population, while the remaining seats were allocated to the highly populated states. In 1930s, the formula of equal proportion arose in which it u ses the stateââ¬â¢s population and divides it by the geometric mean of a stateââ¬â¢s present number of seats and the next seat. According to Rourke (1980, pp 7), reapportionment is viewed as a converter from the rural pattern to an urban dominance. He also states that reapportionment is deemed to produce changes in states, even if the change is minimal. During reapportionment, every state is always expected to gain at least one seat; however, apportionment usually affects the distribution of votes such that those states that loose any seat lose a particular number of electoral votes. After a census, the population growth results assist in reapportioning, which has an impact on the number of votes that a state accumulates in presidential elections. According to Salam (2010), some of the states like Nevada may

Beauty à à à à à à à à à à à à à à à à à à à à à à à à à à à à à à à à à à à à à à à à à à à à à Summary of The Biology of Beauty à à à à à à à à à à Many articles are written by modern psychologists and psychoanalysts that stress the importance of beauty in human and animal breeding as well as survival. One such article The Biology of Beauty suggests this importance and backs it up with many facts and figures as well as surveys on normal people. The article states many theories and hypotheses and also tries to explain why beauty plays such an important role in sexuality and power. What is beauty? According to this article, beauty is a combination of symmetry, special qualities, and traits. à à à à à à à à à à Symmetry is perhaps the most supported part of beauty in this article. The article states that symmetry shows abundance of sexual hormones, health, and strength of the immune system. They support their hypothesis of symmetry's affect on the abundance of sexual hormones with various scientific evidence. Two psychologists, Steven Gangestead and Randy Thornhill measured the symmetry of hundreds of men and women in college. They also asked them to complete a personal confidential survey that gave information on their health and sex lives. What they found was that the men and women with better symmetry had started having sex 3-4 years before the people with average symmetry. Gangestead and Thornhill also completed another survey involving women's responses to symmetrical men and men with average symmetry. The results were as expected. The women with symmetrical partners responded twice as much compared to the women with men having average symmetry. The rate of contraception was also much higher. Animals are much more severe in their choosing. Female penguins won't accept males who aren't plump and symmetrical, and female scorpion flies only accept males with symmetrical wings, as they are better at hunting and protecting. Also, less symmetrical men and women surveyed had more ailments and more frequent accounts of illnesses compared to symmetrical men and women who were overall much healthier. à à à à à à à à à à Special qualities also play a role in beauty. A person with normal features is not considered as beautiful as one with a few outstanding features. New Mexico State University's Victor Johnston conducted a computer survey called FacePrints in which participants of all ages and ethnic groups were asked to give their accounts of a perfect face into the computer. What they came up with was very surprising. Instead of selecting a female with average facial features, the men leaned toward a girlish face consisting of many outstanding features. Their ideal face consisted of a small chin and jaws as well as large eyes and luscious lips. Women value the opposite of the face constructed by men: a face consisting of a strong jaw and chin, prominent

Archetypes in The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn Essay
In the novel The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn, Mark Twain utilizes the archetypes of the Unwilling Hero, the Shape Shifter, and Haven vs. Wilderness to show that Huck Finn and Jim can find freedom all along the banks of the Mississippi River. Huck portrays the unwilling hero because he puts a lot of thought into something before he does it, even though it will benefit everybody. He is also very hesitant to perform heroic acts. The King and Duke show the archetype of the shape shifter because they are constantly lying about their identities and deceiving everybody. The Mississippi represents the characters ââ¬Å"havenâ⬠, and Huck and Jimââ¬â¢s home represents the ââ¬Å"wildernessâ⬠. Huckleberry Finn portrays the archetype of the unwilling hero. Huck is very reluctant to do the right thing, and always feels guilty about everything he does. The challenges Huck had to overcome almost caused Huck and Jim to loose their chance at finding freedom, but he always built up his courage and was pushed to fight for what he thought was right. After Tom and Huck spooked Jim, Tom wanted to take it further and ââ¬Å"tie Jim to a tree for funâ⬠(page 5). Huck had felt guilty for scaring Jim and didnââ¬â¢t want to do anymore harm, so Huck said ââ¬Å"no; he might wake and make a disturbanceâ⬠(page 5). This relates to him being an unwilling hero because you can see that Huck felt bad for doing the wrong thing and his conscience pushed him to do the right thing the second time around. Another time when Huck did something to get Jim and himself further down the river was when he said ââ¬Å"I wonââ¬â¢t let no runaway niggers get by me if I can help it. â⬠(page 91). Huck then went on trying to convince himself that what he did was right. ââ¬Å"They went off and I got aboard the raft, feeling bad and low; because I knowed very well I had done wrong, and I see if warn;t no use for me to try to learn to do rightâ⬠¦then I thought a minute, and says to myself, hold on; sââ¬â¢pose youââ¬â¢d ââ¬Ëaââ¬â¢ done right and giver Jim up, would you felt better than what you do now? No says I, Iââ¬â¢d feel bad-Iââ¬â¢d feel just the same way I do now. Well, then, says I, whatââ¬â¢s the use you ainââ¬â¢t no trouble to do wrong. â⬠(page 91). Huck felt guilty for lying about having Jim aboard with him, he knew that what he was doing was illegal and had trouble seeing the good in what he did. As the reader, you know that Jim is actually a good man and doesnââ¬â¢t deserve to be treated as a slave. But for Huck, it was a really hard struggle for him to convince himself that lying about Jim and doing the immoral thing was actually acting as the hero. Even Huck didnââ¬â¢t think of himself as a hero after he did this, he felt bad about what he did, but the fact that it took a lot to persuade him to feel comfortable about his decision shows that he is suitable for the unwilling hero. In the quote ââ¬Å"I says to myself, this is another one that Iââ¬â¢m letting his rob her of her money. And when she got through they all jest laid theirselves out to make me feel at home and know I was amongst friends. I felt so ornery and low down and mean that I says to myself, my mindââ¬â¢s made up; Iââ¬â¢ll hive that money for them or bust. â⬠(page 175), Huck had just allowed con artist to steal money from many different people and had felt guilty about it because he knew of them being shape shifters all along. When the con artists made their attempt to steal these three innocent girls inheritance, Huck felt so bad that he decided to scheme against them and steal their money back. It took a lot of courage for Huck to do this. The reader and Huck share the knowledge of knowing the King and Dukes real identity as con artists. But with Huck being inside the situation, opposed to the reader being able to see the clear decision, Huck did not want people to know that he had done this deed. This shows that he was still hesitant on wanting to do this heroic act. This is showed when Huck says ââ¬Å"I got to do it in a way that they wonââ¬â¢t suspicion that I done itâ⬠(page 175). Once again it takes a lot of Huck convincing himself to do this heroic act and is still unsure about it after he does this. This clearly shows Huck in the archetype of the unwilling hero. Having Huck step out of his comfort zone lead himself and Jim to freedom, but Huck would not have been able to show as much courage if it werenââ¬â¢t for the archetype of the shapeshifter portrayed by the King and Duke. The Duke and King are always lying about their identity and changing their story, they deceive many people including Jim, threatening Huck and Jimââ¬â¢s chance at freedom. The Duke and King began their role as shape shifters when they were first introduced in the novel. Huck and Jim were fooled by them for a bit, but it didnââ¬â¢t take long for Huck to figure out that these were con artists. Having two shape shifters aboard with them also got Huck to explore his role as the unwilling hero more. You can see this by the way he doesnââ¬â¢t want to say he knows who they really are. ââ¬Å"It didnââ¬â¢t take me long to make up my mind that these liars warnââ¬â¢t no Kings nor Dukes at all, but just low down humbugs and frauds. But I never said nothing, never let on; kept it to myself; itââ¬â¢s the best way; then you donââ¬â¢t have no quarrels, and donââ¬â¢t get into no trouble. â⬠(page 125). The King and Duke scammed a whole town out of $87. 75 by making up a make story just to make some quick money. ââ¬Å"He told them he was a pirate-been a pirate for thirty yearsâ⬠¦heââ¬â¢d been robbed last night and put ashore off of a steamboat without a centâ⬠¦and put in the rest of his life trying to turn the pirates into the true pathâ⬠(page 131) Because the town people thought that their story was so heart touching they decided to give them a lot of money even though they didnââ¬â¢t need it at all. This shows how ruthless these characters actually are even thought they come across as kind people. The King and Dukes final example of being shape shifters was when they sold Jim back as a slave. By doing this Huck and Jim finally realize how cruel and rotten these people are. They completely betrayed the people who had helped these con artists escape down the river buy selling Jim back into slavery for a very small price. This shows their true character and makes Huck so angry, that he finally decides to step up and become Jimââ¬â¢s hero. It was very common for the Duke and King to do this, but it took a lot of courage for Huck to finally decide to rescue Jim. This was Huckââ¬â¢s major act that can be seen as the unwilling hero and the final step into securing Jimââ¬â¢s freedom. All of that can be seen when Huck says ââ¬Å"After all we had done for those scoundrels, here it was all come to nothing, everything was all busted up and ruined, because they could have the heart to sever Jim suck a trick as that, and make him a slave again all his life, and amongst strangers, too, for forty dirty dollarsâ⬠(page 211). Even though the King and Duke where very deceiving shape shifters, they help Huck realize that the Mississippi River was where he could find his freedom and that the river was his ââ¬Å"havenâ⬠. Haven vs. Wilderness is another archetype that is prominent in the novel. Huck and Jim spend almost all of the story out on the Mississippi River, but just because it is in the Wilderness doesnââ¬â¢t mean that that is their ââ¬Å"Wildernessâ⬠. The story starts off with Huck explaining that he has a bad home life. His father is always drunk and doesnââ¬â¢t take care of him, so he lives with the widow. The widow is in full control of Huck and he hates it. He is the kind of person who loves to have freedom and is always striving for it. That is the same for Jim, he is a slave that almost gets sold for money, but all he wants is freedom. Both Huck and Jimââ¬â¢s home lives are not what either of them are looking for. This shows that this part of their lives is actually the Wilderness because to them they are unhappy and not comfortable. This is showed when Huck says ââ¬Å"Pretty soon I wanted to smoke, and asked the widow to let me, but she wouldnââ¬â¢t. â⬠(page 2). Huck and Jim end up running away and spending their lives out on the Mississippi River, hoping that eventually they will cross the border and Huck will have the freedom he wanted and Jim will no longer be a slave. Throughout the story the reader starts to realized that the Mississippi River represents freedom and Huck and Jim have actually found their haven out on the river with each other. Both of them achieve the freedom they want and have a good time exploring and meeting new people (and smoking tobacco). This life is exciting and thrilling for them and is actually what they aspired from the beginning. This is why the Mississippi River is their Haven. You know when Huck gets away when you read ââ¬Å"I fooled pap and got awayâ⬠(page 30). You can also see how Jim was treated when he says ââ¬Å"I hear old missus tell de wider she gwyne to sell me down to Orleans, but she didnââ¬â¢t want to, but she could git eight hundââ¬â¢d dollars for me, en it ââ¬Ëuz sich a big stack oââ¬â¢ money she couldnââ¬â¢ resisââ¬â¢. â⬠(page 43). By the end of the book Huck is saying that he is going to have to stay with his Aunt because his father died and his Aunt couldnââ¬â¢t just let him go. When Huck says ââ¬Å"Aunt Sally sheââ¬â¢s going to adopt me and civilize me, and I canââ¬â¢t stand it. I been there before. â⬠(page 293). Huck is upset about being adopted because you can see that he loved being on the raft with all of the excitement and freedom. Huck is put back into the ââ¬Å"Wildernessâ⬠and finally realizes that what he wants (what his haven is), is to be out exploring the world with his buddies Tom and Jim. Even though this is opposite from what you would expect a haven and a wilderness to be it is what made Huck happy and kept the novel interesting. These places are where Huck finally realized that for the first time in his life he had the freedom that he had always wanted. Through all the example you can see how Mark Twain used the archetypes of the Unwilling Hero, the Shape Shifter, and Haven vs. Wilderness to demonstrate a struggle to freedom in the book The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn. Huck Finn is the Unwilling hero because it takes a lot of persuading for him to do the right thing, but in the end he always does. The King and Duke display the Shape Shifter archetype because of how deceiving and two faced they are around everybody. Finally the Mississippi River represents the characters ââ¬Å"Havenâ⬠and Huck and Jimââ¬â¢s home represent ââ¬Å"Wildernessâ⬠because of how unhappy they are at home opposed to the river where they are both happy. The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn is a very inspirational story of Huck performing selfless heroic acts and will leave you feeling good and hopeful for the characters in their future.
